Retail Agile Experts
BRP’s Agile Approach for Retail helps retailers deploy software up to 50% faster than traditional efforts. Retail is rapidly being redefined. With the swift pace of disruption occurring today, retail winners need to accelerate the transformation of their organization, business processes and technology to align with the demands of their customers.
With significantly faster project completion times, retailers reduce the associated risks and costs throughout the lifecycle of the project.
An Agile Approach is a mindset defined by four Agile values, guided by 12 Agile principles, and implemented via different practices. An Agile-based project management methodology focuses on incrementally delivering small chunks of working software to end users, so they can evaluate if the new functionality is both useful and desired.
Benefits from an Agile Approach
- Delivering small chunks of software at a time allows your organization to quickly respond to changing customer demands
- An emphasis on continuously gathering customer feedback for inclusion in upcoming functionality allows you to ensure that the most valuable functionality for the business is worked on first
- The focus on ensuring that all known risks are addressed as early as possible allows your business to respond to any unforeseen circumstances and adjust the plan accordingly
- A fail fast approach of testing an initiative (whether it be new product, strategy, or functionality) as quickly as possible, so that if the initiative doesn’t go well, it’s easy to swiftly course correct
Agile isn’t just a set of methods and methodologies used to develop software; it’s a philosophy. And it’s a philosophy that BRP embraces with many of our team members trained and experienced in implementing solutions using an Agile Approach. The Agile philosophy focuses on delivering the highest value in the shortest time possible by taking an incremental delivery approach based on these four guiding values from the Agile Manifesto:
- Individuals and interactions OVER processes and tools
In an Agile Approach, the emphasis is on teamwork and communication. Valuing people more highly than processes or tools is easy to understand because it is the people who respond to business needs and drive the development process. While processes and tools are key to developing software, they should never usurp the value of the people on your team. At BRP, we work with you to help identify, develop, and manage the best team to foster effective communication and collaboration throughout the project and across the organization. We can then help to ensure you have the tools and processes to fit the team’s needs, not the other way around. Clear and effective communication is critical as it is the strength of the team together that helps the project succeed.
- Working software OVER comprehensive documentation
The Agile Manifesto values documentation, but it values working software more. An Agile Approach doesn’t eliminate documentation, but BRP can help streamline it to focus on what is necessary to do the work without getting bogged down in needless details. BRP helps to keep the focus on developing software that is clear, self-explanatory, and caters to the tasks that need to get done but evokes the primary goal of software development which is to create a working system, not comprehensive documentation. We’ll make sure just enough documentation is created at the last responsible moment, so that valuable time isn’t wasted updating business and technical requirements documents as requirements change.
- Customer Collaboration OVER Contract Negotiation
An Agile Approach identifies a customer who is involved and collaborates throughout the development process, making it far easier to meet the needs of the customer. BRP helps your development teams be successful by working closely with the team and your customers to foster frequent communication. We help your team develop a mindset that is open to being flexible and accommodating to the inevitable changes in customer needs; instead of being rigid on the requirements defined in the statement of work (SOW) at the beginning of the project – when we had the least amount of information available on the project details. Creating a relationship with customers that encourages frequent communication enables the project to move forward in a cost effective and efficient manner.
- Responding to Change OVER Following a Plan
Agile’s view is that changes improve a project by providing additional value. Change is the reality of software development projects – changes in customer needs, changes in technology, changes in business trends. While a project plan is important to guide the process, it must be flexible so that changes can be made throughout the process, otherwise the plan quickly becomes obsolete. With Agile, the shortness of an iteration means priorities can be shifted from iteration to iteration and new features can be added into the next iteration allowing for a more nimble approach. BRP helps ensure that changes are addressed and embraced to keep each iteration moving forward effectively.
These four guiding values serve as the foundation for the various Agile frameworks, such as Scrum, Kanban, Lean, XP, etc., that have been developed over the years. These Agile frameworks form the basis of BRP’s Agile Approach for Retail to provide our teams with the techniques and tools needed to begin your Agile transformation.
