Forbes – In just two decades, new developments in digital technology have upended nearly every aspect of traditional retailing.
Even the exchange of actual cash for goods is fast becoming obsolete. By equipping staffers with mobile payment devices such as tablets , handheld scanners and belt-clip printers, many retailers are eliminating checkout lines. Done right, so-called line-busting can dramatically increase shopper satisfaction — and, therefore, retention.
According to Perry Kramer, vice president and practice lead at Boston Retail Partners, “Moving the customer engagement system to the cloud must be a portion of a much larger evolution of retail toward a customer-centric approach.” Customer data, including loyalty programs and the like, are often stored in the cloud, and thus readily accessible to help the sales associate and improve the in-store experience.
Additionally, cautioned Kramer, “choosing a POS system has always been a seven- to 10-year investment. Do you have a partner that’s strategically aligned with your company for the long run?”
As POS gear, such as Epson’s OmniLink Merchant Services, sets itself up in the cloud, answering this question will become even more critical. “You are relying on a partner who’s hosting your applications and data to cooperate,” Kramer said.
